DAY 1

Dar es Salaam to Siwandu, Nyerere, Selous

Just 45 minutes flight from Dar & you will find yourselves in Tanzania's newest National Park, Nyerere, in the Selous Game Reserve, the largest in Africa. Selous Game Reserve boasts UNESCO World Heritage Site status for very good reason; home to the most exceptional and diverse wildlife, Selous has more than half of Tanzania’s elephant population, over 40,000 hippos and the largest population of lion on the continent.

Siwandu camp is a 10 minute game drive from the airstrip and is located in a grove of palms on the shore of Lake Nzerakera.  As well as ensuring a stunning backdrop for the camp, this lakeshore location offers a consistency of game viewing as the animals gravitate around the lake and is the only place in East Africa where you can experience water-based game activities.

After your orientation briefing you will have time to settle into your tented suite overlooking the lake before a mouthwatering two course lunch on the Pontoon boat. Tucking into your lunch whilst drifting past crocodiles & hippos adds a very different dimension to the culinary experience!

Meet your fellow safari friends over afternoon tea and freshly baked cake before embarking on your first game activity followed by camp fire drinks, a delicious, freshly prepared, three course dinner under the stars and a peaceful sleep with the noises of the bush just beyond the canvas.

DAYS 2 - 3

Siwandu, Nyerere, Selous

With early morning tea or coffee and freshly baked biscuits delivered to your tent by your personal butler, you can prepare for the day of adventure and exploring the reserve after breakfast.  At Siwandu game drives tend to take place after breakfast as by then, the animals have gravitated towards the lake to drink ensuring a far denser concentration of game around the camp.

Siwandu offers a lovely wide range of game activities for our guests to experience. Discover the landscape in 4WD open sided game vehicles, led by an expert driver guide to explain wild encounters and extraordinary stories and information. Alternatively take a leisurely boat cruise on our lake and the Rufiji River tributaries; venture close and watch animals from a different perspective and delve into the fascinating life of water birds and our wonderful populations of hippo and crocodile.

Or perhaps you wish to feel the thrill of a dawn game walk and have the opportunity to track animals and engage with the smaller habitats and ecosystems.

DAY 4

Siwandu, Nyerere, Selous - Fanjove Private Island, Songo Songo Archipelago

The journey to Fanjove is all part of the private island adventure! A 40-minute flight from Dar to the neighbouring island of Songo Songo is followed by a 5 minute ride on a Tuk Tuk before embarking on a traditional dhow boat for the final 40 minute leg.

You will disembark straight into the crystal-clear warm waters and onto the beach in front of the historical lighthouse built in 1863.  A refreshing cooled flannel and freshly prepared coconut drink is offered with delightful smiles and warmth.

You will then be shown to your spacious room (or Banda) that is designed to resemble the traditional East African Dhow Sail.  The Bandas are woven in the traditional all-natural materials and have large swing doors that are opened up to face the beach. If you decide to keep them open at night you can wake up feeling refreshed to the sun coming over the seas horizon for a natural morning wake up.

A great way to familiarise yourself with Fanjove is to enjoy a sunset trip on a dhow sailing boat that will provide you with beautiful views of the island as the sun goes down.  That night you can enjoy your delicious dinner of light fresh fish on the beach in front of the lighthouse.

DAYS 5 - 10

Fanjove Private Island, Songo Songo Archipelago

After waking up to morning sun from your banda you can go on a pre-breakfast snorkel trip.  The snorkelling can be done right off the main beach meaning that natural and exotic marine life that inhabit the shores of Fanjove is only ever a few steps away. For those who are a little more energetic, there is the opportunity to go kayaking to gain a different perspective of the island.

A highlight for any trip to Fanjove is to venture out on a dolphin/whale excursion. Taking 2-3 hours, spend an extraordinary and blissful morning in the majestic company of humpback whales and multiple bods of spinner dolphins, leaping gleefully about the boat’s prow.  If you are adventurous then you can submerge into the water with a mask & snorkel and swim in the ocean with the dolphin all around you within touching distance and hearing them communicate under the waves.

Back on dry land, you can explore the island is to take an island walk either on your own or led by a team member.  Meet
the village elder who will divulge the history and culture of the island and will even show you his traditional home. At the end of a jam-packed day, enjoy a cold beverage at the top of the lighthouse to enjoy incredible panoramic views that will be forever imprinted in your memory. Be sure to look out for the myriad species of bird that feature in the island, as you may even be surprised as to what you might find.

DAY 11

Fanjove Private Island, Songo Songo Archipelago - Dar es Salaam

No stay at Fanjove would be complete without a diving experience. There is a 11 km long coral reef that embraces the entire eastern profile of the island: at this point the big waves run out in strength, ensuring quiet baths and water activities….perfect for both snorkelers and divers. You can learn about how the team at Fanjove work very closely with the local population to undertake a very active marine conservation programme.

Even as all these options are available for you to enjoy on Fanjove you will have plenty of time to relax on the beach, in a place so remote it is the ideal space to re-charge your mind and take some time out for yourself.

With your bags packed and your trip coming to a close you will set sail back to Songo Songo to begin making your journey back home.
